Methodology

Comparing verse texts

1. We collect several publications of a text and extract its lines.
2. Software lines them up and normalises differences that do not change the text: punctuation, verse numbers, spacing, headings such as "doha" or "chhand", and the order in which some sites type nasal and nukta marks.
3. Sources that copy each other are grouped and counted once.
4. For each line, the reading given by the most independent groups is used, provided at least two agree.
5. Lines that differ only in spelling are settled by the convention of the text's language (for example Awadhi spelling in Tulsidas). Lines that remain in dispute are resolved only in favour of a reading that sources actually print, with the reason written down, or the text is held back.

Readings that differ only in a vowel sign can change the meaning, so every such case is checked by reading the line in context.

Calculating dates

Our panchang engine computes the positions of the sun and moon from established astronomical algorithms, uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and takes sunrise at the upper limb of the sun with standard refraction. From these it finds tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, the lunar month (amanta and purnimanta), and the period of each day that a festival's rule depends on, such as sunrise, midday, afternoon, Pradosh or Nishita (midnight).

Each festival has a written rule, for example "Chaitra Shukla Navami prevailing at midday". Some rules have exceptions from the Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu as applied by north Indian panchangs, such as moving Holika Dahan or Raksha Bandhan to avoid Bhadra. Smarta and Vaishnava dates are given separately where they differ. Dates are for New Delhi unless a city is named.

Checking dates

A computed date is published only when at least two online panchangs give the same date and none gives a different one. A date is also held if the deciding moment falls within fifteen minutes of a tithi boundary, because a small difference in method or place could change the day. If a reference later disagrees with a published date, the date is withdrawn until the difference is understood.

The current counts are shown below.
